The School of Computer Science celebrated π – Day in style on Friday, March 13, 2009 with a profusion of palatable, piquant pies. The Computer Science Society hosted the event providing 15 pies (apple, honey apple crumble, rhubarb strawberry, pumpkin, blueberry and cherry) served along with ice cream and whipping cream. The Java lab was filled to its capacity with students, faculty and staff.
π –day is celebrated in recognition of the numerical mathematical constant whose value is the ratio of any circle's circumference to its diameter. The first π –day was held at the San Francisco Exploratorium in 1988 and was founded by Larry Shaw, a now retired physicist at the Exploratorium. π –day is celebrated at many universities and often MIT sends out their acceptance letters on that date.
